Starting in October the Midwest GMRS team set out to upgrade a Racine County icon, the Old Iron Ranch GMRS repeater in Union Grove WI. Its owner WQEQ792 has been hosting this repeater for many years and it was due a proper upgrade. We began the project with the installation of a 50′ tower donated by WQPW584 and some labor from our system administrator WQVA593. After a rather nasty job of digging a hole large enough to hold 2 yards of concrete the base section and ground system was completed. On November 11th a team of 4 us descended on the Old Iron Ranch to install the tower, hard line, the antenna and repeater. With a rented tow behind 50′ lift and and some will power (BALLS) we fought gusty winds and pouring rain (putting antenna up in storm) only to have it all clear up as soon as we finished. Over all it was fun and the system works great. Union Grove is serviced with full quieting portable coverage with that coverage extending into Racine and Milwaukee. Serviceable range is a solid 25 miles with mobiles adding a solid single site system to the network. This site is serviced with a backup generator in the event of a sustained wide area power outage.
